Welcome to CURE
– A multiplayer microbiology based Real Time Strategy Game.
You play as a scientist with the power to genetically modify your microbe to cure the worst diseases and protect humanity, or wreak havoc on the world with engineered mayhem. Playing around with the traditional RTS genre, CURE adds a unique upgrading system that you would normally find in an RPG. As you play, you can custom tailor your units using genetic engineering, and these changes are permanent. You can focus crafting a team that has a specific ability, and/or you can specialize your units so that they have specific properties – such as strength or speed. The more you play, the more you can create an ideal team to conquer your online opponents.

- Persistence: You can upgrade your units, and these changes are permanent.
- Dynamic Units: Your units are unique and distinguishable. How your units look is based on how you upgrade them. No two players will ever be the exact same.
- Multiplayer: Quick paced highly competitive multiplayer.
- Tournaments and Ladders: There are weekly and monthly events in CURE in which the winners receive unique abilities, units, and upgrades.
- Science: CURE is built with science in mind, and uses the same fundamentals of microbiology that you would expect to learn about in a biology class.
- Highly Strategic Gameplay: The strongest organism is not always the winner. Players can utilize their environment and intelligence to gain an advantage over their opponent.
- Physical world: You can physically push objects around, and create fortifications or choke points to get the edge on your opponent.

We are proud to announce the release of our free single player demo! It is a work in progress but we will be updating it throughout our Gamekicker Campaign, so make sure to check back in to see what we have added.
It is still very rough, but it should give you some idea of were we would like to take CURE, with your help.

In CURE your microbe will be pitted against other players creations in multiplayer combat. However your main goal will not always be to kill your opponent. Each match or experiment will have a different goal you will have to adapt to. In many experiments each player will have a different goal. This means that you will need to tailor your species to be able to handle different situations.
A few examples of possible experiments:
- Kill your opponent: This would be your typical RTS game type where you have to destroy all of your enemies units in order to win.
- Defend your environment / Destroy your environment: The defending player will have to destroy his enemy before they permanently hurt the environment.
- Survive: Each player will have to survive in an increasingly hostile environment. The player that can survive the longest wins.
- Resource domination: Each player will have to survive for a certain amount of time, and the player with the most resources consumed at the end of said time period will win.
Once the match type has been chosen the game will then generate your environment.

There are currently 5 environment types with more to come. Pond, Petri Dish, Brain, Blood, and Intestines.
Before your experiment begins you will be shown what attributes are present in your environment for example how many resources will be available. There will be many aspects to your environment that you will need to prepare for when you consider your strategy for this experiment. Temperatures, chemicals, predators, or even radiation are challenges you must endure.

Chemicals:
Chemicals present in the environment can sometimes be a blessing as well as a curse, since some chemicals will be the very food you eat, or special chemicals your bacteria need in order to change their physiology. Other chemicals may harm your units. Chemicals will present themselves to the player as small pockets. While in these chemical pockets a unit will suffer whatever the consequences are for exposing itself to said chemicals. Chemical pockets will have a finite amount of chemicals per pocket. This means these resources are not permanent and will run out, forcing players to find new resources.

Temperature and Radiation:
Temperature and radiation zones will also be an obstacle for the player to overcome. These will be much larger sections of the level than a typical chemical pocket, and will have different effects on the units in them. Depending on the temperature of the area your unit is in it can have a number of side effects, from increased breeding speed to death. Radiation zones will be a rarer occurrence, and may only show up in certain experiments. These areas will damage the units, but give your units an increased chance of mutation.
Most of the chemical pockets as well as the radiation and temperature zones will contribute to causing mutations in your units which will help drive your units evolution as well as the genetic engineering section of the game.
Predators:
Predators will come in several shapes and sizes. There are two major types of Predators roaming, and targeting. Roaming predators will roam the environment looking for things to kill (mainly you) In the body these will be Phagocytes, and in non body environments they will be other life forms that can prey on your units. The strength and quantity of these units is based on the Environment Hostility of the experiment. Targeting predators will only attack when certain conditions are met and will usually attack en masse. The Environment or host, will be keeping track of what is going on inside of it, when too much of it has been “disturbed” it will respond by sending out targeted predators. In a body this would be an immune response. In a non body environment these would be a different type of natural predators than the roaming ones. Because the environment is tracking the players actions, players may be able to influence the environments response system and even get your host to attack your target.
Once the environment has been created then the players starting units will be loaded into the environment and the match will begin.

Bacteria will be the first playable organism type. They have a few concepts that are universal to all bacteria units in the game:
- Fission: All bacteria will be able to commit binary fission. This will happen when the unit has absorbed enough nutrients to fission. This will create a copy of the current bacteria. During this copying the new unit will have a chance to incur a mutation. These mutations will pass on to future generations of this bacteria.
- Morphing: This term describes the idea of a bacteria unit changing its physiology based on environmental stimulus, into another unit. (we chose the term morphing so as not to confuse players with mutations which occur during reproduction). This morphing can happen when a unit has absorbed certain chemicals present in the environment. Each unit will have a required amount of certain chemicals absorbed in order to be transformed into it.
- Digestion: Bacteria units will be able to secrete a chemical that will slowly “digest” a dead unit. Once the unit is fully dissolved the nutrients can be absorbed from the dead unit. The more units digesting something the quicker it will dissolve.
- Motility: All bacteria will be able to move about their environment. They will all have different speeds and will mainly rely on the flagella as their main engine for movement.
- Chemotaxis: This is the process by which bacteria can sense the world around them, the player does not directly interact with this ability other than it dictates the units sight.
More abilities: Bacteria will also be able to gain access to other abilities beyond their own unit abilities through mutations.
- Chemical Conversion: This process will allow a bacteria to convert one type of chemical into another. Basically how chemical conversion will work is you will use the ability while in the appropriate chemical pocket, and your unit will slowly convert the chemicals from the pocket into a new chemical pocket with the new type of chemical.
- Endospore: Bacterial units can unlock the ability to enter an endospore state. While in the endospore state they will not be able to reproduce, move or take other action. They will however become incredibly hard to kill. There will also be a more advanced version of endospore where a bacteria will still be able to move around and have some limited access to their abilities, however they will still not be able to reproduce.
- Extra Chemotaxis sensitivity: This ability will allow the unit to see through the abilities in the game that allow units to become essentially invisible.
There will certainly be more abilities that will be available to all bacteria as we continue development.
Whenever a unit reproduces it will have a chance to gain a mutation. There are many environmental conditions that will increase its chances of gaining a mutation. This means the more trials and tribulations your unit goes through the higher the chance you will gain a mutation will become.
When a mutation occurs your unit will gain the effects of the mutation, which will often come with some sort of visual change. There is also a small chance that a mutation will result in death of the new unit. Not all mutations will result in a benefit for the unit, in fact most mutations will have both benefits and drawbacks. Should the mutated unit reproduce its copies will also have this new mutation. This means that through directed breeding you could create units with multiple mutations in them in one match. These mutations will typically be stat changes for the unit. However mutations can also produce a whole new unit which is how players unlock new units, and can also give units new abilities.

Horizontal Gene Transfer
We will also be adding a horizontal gene transfer system. This system will work when a bacteria is in prolonged contact with another, or when it is digesting a unit. This transfer is not guaranteed but you would normally see the mutation spread through your bacteria over time if you kept them in constant contact. This also applies to enemy units as well, however slightly differently. With enemies you have a chance to steal some of their genetic code. This would apply to any mutations or genes they have on their unit not just new mutations.
Mutations to Genes
If you win your match you will be able to gain all of your new mutations (including anything you have gathered from an enemy) as new genes. Imagine genes are items that represent the mutations gathered while playing. This means you will now have a chance to permanently add these mutations to your units using genetic engineering if you want. If you lose the match we may decide to give the player a consolation prize of some kind, however you will certainly not gain all of your mutations.
Genes are the representations of your mutations, they are basically items in the game sense. Imagine genes are items that be equiped to your character through genetic engineering. Not all genes will be simble stat boosts, there will be special genes that give new abilities and attributes to your organism. The following are just some of the properties that make up a gene.
Gene Effects:
The most obvious property of a gene is its effects. This is what the gene does when added to the DNA. This is where all of your stat manipulation or abilities will be placed.
Type:
The second aspect to a gene is what type of gene it is. This type dictates how it will work with other genes in your DNA. Type does not denote exactly what a gene does, but will often be used to dictate how it works in the chain of DNA, and behind the scenes it will help shape how a gene is created. There are 13 basic types of genes.
Receptors and Effectors:
The third aspect of genes are their receptor and effector types. Each Gene has one receptor and one effector They can be the same or different types. These dictate where the gene can be put in the DNA chain. When placing a gene the effectors and receptors between the genes must match. There are 8 types of receptors and effectors.
Rarity
The rarity of a gene is basically a representation of how powerful a gene is, and how rare it is. There are 5 tiers of rarity: Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Unique (Handout only).
Genetic engineering is process by which you can permanently edit your units giving them new abilities stats and strategies. This is complicated process that has many moving parts. Some aspects of our Genetic Engineering system will be a slight gamification of reality, but we think we have come up with a system that will be incredibly fun to play and not too far off from biology.
The main purpose behind Genetic engineering and the mutation system in general is to increase the stats of your units. These stats will affect everything from the speed of your unit, to how good its special abilities are. This is because almost all aspects of the game will be rooted in the stats. This does not always mean higher stats are better, each unit and each ability will use the stats differently. Some abilities will be penalized by having certain stats high. This means a player is not on a quest to just get all of their numbers high, it’s about finding the best stat layout for your idea.
Genes are gathered in matches by gaining mutations and then winning the match. From there the genes are put into your gene library.
From here you have a few options:
Disassemble:
This will allow you to get rid of a gene and reclaim its value in Nucleotides which is the currency of genes.
Extract Blueprint:
This will allow player to map out the gene and be able to recreate it from nucleotides. This process will be difficult and may often result in the loss of the gene forcing players to decide from wanting to be able to make copies of a gene or potentially losing it forever.
Assemble:
This will allow players to make a gene that they have blueprinted. This will cost Nucleotides. A player can make as many copies of a blueprinted gene as he wants assuming he has the right number of nucleotides.
Adding Genes to your units
Now that you have your genes you are ready to do some genetic engineering. This works by adding your genes to your DNA chain for the unit you wish to engineer. The DNA Chain is essentially the order of your current genes. The game reads your genes in order from left to right. This DNA chain is what makes your unit YOUR unit, this is where you will change its stats or give it new abilities etc.
The order in which you place your genes is very important to the over outcome of your DNA chain. Combining the effects of several genes for one big payoff is one of the main driving forces behind the genetic engineering aspect of CURE. The way this will work is each gene will have 2 kinds of effects. The first type of effect are the effects that only apply to itself. These will be base stats, Stat multipliers, Cost modifiers etc. The second type of effect will be effects that apply to other genes outside of itself. These genes will work together in a specific order. The genes will be read from left to right each gene will have its external effects applied in that order.
Applying Your Code
Once you are satisfied with all of your changes you will have to run your test and see if all of your changes were successfully added to the Unit. This process is either successful or not, so you will not have a situation where you will add some new genes and not others. The chance of a successful integration will be based on the genes you have added. Should you fail, you will lose all of the genes you have tried to add to your unit. This means that whenever possible you should try to add the least amount of new DNA per session that you can. This is also the reason that Blueprinting your genes will be such a rewarding, and difficult task.

CURE takes place in the near future where technology has allowed scientists to push the boundaries of microbial research faster than ever. In 2025 inventor Keneth Warden described his new creations.
“The technologies we are creating now will give future generations unprecedented abilities to observe and influence the microbiological world, in ways we can only imagine. We will be able to see the microbial world in much higher resolution and clarity than ever before. Computer automated system can safely run experiments using data from multiple scientists around the world allowing for a new age of collaboration. Computer guided genetic programs will aid geneticists in identifying and understanding genetic expression and allowing them to create new life forms that have never been seen before, that can change humanity’s future forever. I’m confident that these systems will allow us to create new life forms that could ultimately replace our own immune systems making us impervious to disease. “
The U.S. Government seeing this technology emerging and what it could mean for the future, set up a secret program underneath the umbrella of the armed forces. This is the CURE program: The Contagion Utilization and Research Experiment. The main object of the CURE project was to create pathogens that can help heal sicknesses. A secondary objective was to understand how technology would be shaping the future of genetic engineering and of course find a way to defend against it.
This is where you come in. In the campaign mode you will take control of the newest member of the team and follow their journey through trials and tribulation of these experiments while you ultimately build your perfect specimen. The question is will your organism be a gift to mankind that could allow us to move forward into a new age of prosperity, or will your organism unleash a plague that will ripple through history?
Advanced Experiments
Unlike most RTS games in CURE the campaign levels and the normal multiplayer matches are able to be played on the same character. The way this works is you choose to play in either a normal Experiment or match, or you choose to do an Advanced Experiment. These Advanced Experiment matches will basically be boss fights that will unlock the next part of the campaign storyline if you win. These boss fights will still be controlled by other players, but they will not be playing on their characters, but on a character that we make. The reason for this is we felt that humans make the best opponents, and playing as someone else’s boss just sounded like fun. If you win as a boss you get special genes that you can use to upgrade your units. If you win your boss fight as the player than you get to move forward in the campaign unlocking a more difficult boss fight, as well as receiving special genes you can use to upgrade your units. These boss fights will continue to get more difficult and will continue past the end of the campaign giving you more difficult content to try and beat. The Vanguard reward allows you to help us create one of these boss encounters.

Focus on: Small + Independent + Video Games
Gamekicker more than any other crowd funding platform supports small independent video gamedevelopers. They have made a very needed spot where small time indie games can get the attention that they deserve while not being overshadowed by huge game companies or being lumped in with hundreds of other unrelated products.
What you see is what you get
We support Gamekicker because we feel like they are bringing much needed integrity and honesty to crowdfunding. They require a playable demo and they firmly vet all of the companies that make it onto their platform – this means gamer’s have a way to know what they are buying and they know that what they are buying is coming from reputable and well vetted people, people that are dedicated and capable of delivering exactly what they have promised; which is vastly different from most other forms of crowdfunding… and we like that!
They are our type of people
Gamekicker is new and very small, and we believe in supporting other small and driven people and causes. — and that support goes both ways with Gamekicker, who have spent countless hours with us discussing CURE and with invaluable and countless tips on how to better get the word out about how amazing it is!

FAQ
When will CURE be out?
We won’t make any promises we can’t keep. We hold to the motto that if it is worth doing, it is worth doing right.
Tentatively speaking, we would like to have the game in a beta state by Summer 2016.
But in the mean time, we are going to be adding to and refining the Single Player Demo. It is much easier to make sweeping changes in a single player game than in a multiplayer one, so the demo will be our testing grounds for new ideas and where we will be implementing ideas from the community.
What are you going to be using the money for?
As with all video games most of the crowd funding will go into development costs. We will however be applying a good amount of the money towards setting up the networking infrastructure for our dedicated online multiplayer experience.
With your generous support, you will help us to create CURE and to get it done even sooner than our current pace! Every little bit helps!
What game systems will CURE be out for
CURE is specifically going to be made for PC. If there is a demand for it, we would like to expand that to Linux and Mac as well.
RTS games are typically better on computer than on consoles, so our focus is currently on computers. But this is one of the many things we will be floating ideas by the CURE community to see what our player-base wants (and especially for people that have ‘voting rights’ granted by some of our rewards).
However I can say without a doubt, CURE is going to be released for PC.
Steam?
Yes. We hope you support our steam greenlight campaign as well!
I want to help more, what can I do?
Like and share our project with your friends, every little bit helps!

You guys voted and the results are in, we have been greenlit!

CURE will be on Steam. We cant thank the community enough for supporting us. We are so extremely excited to bring you CURE we can hardly stand it.
CURE v1.0.2 is live
